Children from low-income families often face barriers that limit access to educational tools, creative resources, and outlets for self-expression. These challenges can prevent children from reaching their full potential. With a focus on accessibility, fun, and emotional engagement, Scribblie bridges the gap for children in low-income communities, by providing them with the tools to imagine, create, and express themselves regardless of financial barriers.
The research began by exploring issues in Charlotte communities, asking the question: "How can design create meaningful support systems for children from low-income families?" I identified key problems and strengths, conducted visual research, benchmarking, secondary research, and interviewed individuals. Through this process, I discovered that cuts to art programs were not only limiting creative opportunities but also affecting how children expressed themselves, leading to struggles with confidence and communication. This insight led to the idea behind Scribblie: a brand designed to help children reconnect with creativity and self-expression.
Scribblie is a brand built on accessibility, fun, and emotional engagement, designed to make creativity feel effortless and inviting. In order to spark creativity within children, Scribblie's visual identity features a warm and playful color palette of pink, yellow, blue, green, black, and white. This is complemented by bold, rounded typography, which adds a sense of warmth and approachability.
A mascot named Billie the Bear is also created to be the children's companion on their journey.
Three products were designed to support children's creativity: a donation website, an interactive activity guide, and a creativity kit box.
The first product is a website that serves as the central hub for our mission, offering information, inspiring news, and clear ways to support the project. It is designed to foster trust and raise awareness, ensuring that visitors can easily engage with the project, whether by learning more, sharing stories, or making donations to support its initiatives.
The second product is A Playful Creativity Guide and it is designed to spark self-expression, featuring interactive activities that encourage storytelling, emotional reflection, and imaginative play. Children could also open the rings of the binder to give gifts to their loved ones.
The third product is the Scribblie Kit Box which brings these elements together. Distributed through schools and community centers, each box provides creative tools, stickers, a keychain, and A Playful Creativity guide that ensures every child, regardless of financial background, has the opportunity to explore their creativity.
Through carefully designed tools, we help spark creativity, build confidence, and create new opportunities for those who need them the most with Scribblie.
